Butterfly-shaped gland in the neck that produces hormones regulating metabolism.
The thyroid produces T4 and T3 hormones. Hypothyroidism (underactive) is common, especially in women — treated with levothyroxine. Hyperthyroidism (overactive) requires endocrinology referral. Hashimoto's is the most common cause of hypothyroidism (autoimmune).
